Sailor Moon: Kunzite Zoisite - A Beautiful Spell

Description

Zoisite likes pretty things, and Kunzite knows how to make pretty things.

I'm going to Anime Festival Orlando this weekend, and they've recently announced some voice actors who are going to be there.  One of them happens to be Zoisite's new voice actor for the re-dub of Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon Crystal.  I don't know what he'll sound like but I'm pretty excited about it!  Sailor Moon was one of my favorite shows growing up, and Kunzite/Zoisite was my very first ship.  I had no idea at the time that it was a yaoi ship, because in the dub Zoisite had been cast as a woman.  I found out the truth about the Sailor Moon dub when I first discovered the internet, and while I was shocked at first it ultimately changed nothing about how I felt about either character.

This might sound odd, but this is one of the reasons why I support LGBT representation in media.  I loved them as villains because they weren't just pure evil, and their love for each other was sincere (as proven later in the story when things happen... ;3; ), and the fact that they were both men didn't make a difference.  Their relationship was the same whether Zoisite was cast as male or female.  I think that's a good thing for young viewers to see, especially since more people can find characters they can relate to who aren't treated as stereotypes.  It also helps to build tolerance, I think, by normalizing something that /is/ normal but may not seem normal to children who've simply have never had exposure to it, if that makes sense.  When I first found out that Zoisite was a man, I knew what homosexuality was in theory but didn't personally know anyone who was gay (actually I did, but I didn't know it at the time).  LGBT representation in media I feel helps broaden people's horizon and breed tolerance.

Of course everyone's going to have their own viewpoint on the matter, and that is completely respectable.  I'm not intending to start a debate.  This is simply my perspective.

Admittedly it's exciting to try and draw a fan art from a series I used to be so obsessed with but barely ever drew fan art for.  At the time, I wasn't strong enough as an artist to draw anything substantial with fan art, and this is my only other attempt at my first ship - www.deviantart.com/art/Kunzite… While the original series with all its faults still holds a nostalgic place in my heart, I am glad that Sailor Moon's being redubbed properly and I hope Zoi's new voice actor will like this image!

EDIT (7/28/14):  Zoisite's new male voice actor, Lucien Dodge, happened to come to my Art Table at Anime Festival Orlando!  I knew he was going to be at the convention but I didn't recognize him right away when he came (I just don't anticipate voice actors to come to my art table, though it's happened before on rare occasions and I love it!)  He was really happy to see this print and we talked a little bit about Zosiite and Sailor Moon - then he told me he was Zoisite's VA!  It was awesome.  I later went to his panel with Christina Vee and Stephanie Sheh, which was also a lot of fun.  I love it when the voice actors mingle with us outside of the panels.  At larger conventions it's harder to do that but at smaller ones, it's happens at times.  :D

I'll never forget when I first learned Zoicite was supposed to be male. It came as a surprise, but Zoi was still awesome as a woman too. I loved the female voice and when I learned who the original male voice actor was in Japanese, it still impressed me. :)
